ABSTRACT
The massive increase in women's wage labor both in advanced industrial and in developing countries has generated intense debate over its effects on women's status. Does wage labor merely exploit women as a source of cheap labor and add to the burden of their domestic chores? Or does wage labor give women greater autonomy and raise their consciousness regarding gender subordination?
