ABSTRACT

The workshop brought together researchers with widely varying perspectives who are pursuing a variety of research paradigms. The participants were united in seeking overarching principles of organization for biological systems. Some researchers brought detailed studies of developmental or physiological processes to the workshop; some brought summaries of evolutionary trends; and some brought mathematical models which, to varying degrees, could be related to specific biological processes. The interplay of these approaches led to spirited discussions and revealed several complementary points of view.
