The concept of reflective practice is one with which you will be familiar if you have engaged with a Postgraduate Certificate in teaching and learning, or from reading around the teaching in higher education literature, or perhaps from discussing with colleagues. Some areas of practice, such as nursing and midwifery, also have a strong tradition of reflection as a way of thinking and practising within the discipline; other discipline areas place less overt emphasis on reflection but it will implicitly inform the ways in which practice is developed and enhanced. You may also be aware of the associated concept of reflexivity, which we’ll look at in greater detail in Chapter 7, where we consider drivers within our practice.
