ABSTRACT

This chapter offers succinct reflections on a few historical signposts regarding this book’s central themes. Issues discussed cover principally a retrospective on selected past events or situations that have affected wellbeing. Our reflections cover such vital issues as freedom versus servitude; socio-political emancipation; the role of global cooperation guided by the common good; and science’s links to ethical values. In interpreting human behaviour, one needs to be extremely cautious in avoiding anachronisms, in ascertaining the truthfulness of information, and in situating events in their proper historical perspective.
