ABSTRACT

Nos is a psychic agent which I distinguish from the id, from the ego, and from the superego. Phylogenetically as well as ontogenetically speaking, the ego and the nos emerge from the id. I assume that all living beings have the potential to develop in such a way that its individual development goes hand in hand with the development of its group and its species. A species will develop only when its members do. In this sense, the evolution of the human species is a task of every human being. The main difference between the ego and the nos is that the ego is basically an aggressive agent; it separates, it makes the point that “I am different from you”, whereas the nos unites, it makes me aware that we are alike. The superego is only a transitory introject, and it becomes less important when the ego and nos reach a certain level of development, when nos takes over as the proper moral function.
