ABSTRACT

Three more introductory considerations are needed to provide a solid base for the evolutionary probes that are to follow. The first is a presentation of the hierarchical structure of psychoanalysis, which will define a psychoanalytic theory that has substance and depth. The second is a hierarchical theory of evolution that has sufficient depth for its alliance with the psychoanalytic domain. And, finally, we will need a clear picture of our unit of selection (Lewontin, 1970)—the emotion-processing mind.
