Cigarettes and exploitation: a prologue

The Standard Oil Company and the British-American Tobacco Company have long operated well into the interior, as is true also of course of the missionaries. This has led to the witticism that these are the three principal American activities in China and that the motto of all three is ‘Let there be light’. ¹
