ABSTRACT
Generalisations about audience responses to plays are neither sensible nor possible. Audiences are composed of individuals, and each individual has unique prejudices, desires and interests. But it is possible to open a discussion of the popular audience in the open air theatres by taking note that this was a theatre of conventions. Implicitly, actors and audience accepted these conventions. Without that agreement, the theatre practice would have broken down.
