ABSTRACT

It is important to recognize that the evaluation of students’ competency in the clinical setting must begin immediately, and measures for remediating deficient performance must be addressed quickly. Nursing programs conduct clinical experiences in semesters or quarters that can be any number of weeks, depending on the curriculum. Clinical hours may be six, eight or 12-hour shifts on one, or multiple days, per week. Therefore, determine early in the clinical rotation when a “midterm” evaluation meeting for every student should occur. Students really do want to know how they are progressing. Midterm evaluation is not just for the struggling student. Put your observations in a written format, which may or may not be provided to you by your nursing program.
