In this chapter, we will focus on the extent to which the content of academic programs in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) address TESOL career path development (CPD) issues. Because those are considered the standard for our profession, we will consider academic programs of study at the postgraduate level (the Master's is considered the “terminal degree” for English language teachers worldwide though many doctoral level programs are now available). Master's level degrees are the standard bearer. While certificates in TESOL may come and go and may be less valuable than academic programs in their role for TESOL CPD, those are also considered here. How and to what extent does the content of our formal education make an impact on us as professionals throughout our careers in TESOL?
