ABSTRACT
The two most important principles of Christian ethics are those expressed in the conjunctive command: love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and thy neighbour as thyself. It follows that it is a common fallacy to suppose that the Christian ethic can easily be followed by atheists, who will have difficulty with the first of the two commandments, however well they may succeed with the second. It is, I think, just an evasion to say that the former reduces to the latter on the grounds that to love thy neighbour is to love God. It is not.
