ABSTRACT
This chapter begins when the previous chapter ends, the crime drop. This chapter reviews the standard explanations for the crime drop of the 1990s and beyond. After this review, a set of criteria for assessing the explanations for the crime drop are explained and used to assess the standard explanations. Finally, an approach that considers the role of environmental criminology is reviewed, which is able to address many of the limitations of previous attempts to explain this phenomenon.
