ABSTRACT

In the previous two chapters I have reviewed the literature and research findings of Western and Chinese scholars and researchers. This has provided me with a map which will help me to discover many stories which were previously unknown and to deduce the meaning of the knowledge and data I have gathered. The stepfamily is an institution which has been deliberately shunned by society but it is beginning to be understood as a result of the information collected for this study by the indepth, personal interviews with ten stepmothers, eight teachers and eight social workers. In this chapter let us first look at the social attitudes and parental perceptions of stepparenting in Hong Kong.
