ABSTRACT
Employment, historically, was the main means by which young people became socially and economically integrated into the wider society. This transition took place at a relatively early age in Britain, in a stratified, socially reproductive way but the social processes involved were not, in themselves, seen as sufficient to produce effective ‘worker-citizens’.
