ABSTRACT

Outside the metropolitan cities by far the most important centre of the U.S.S.R. was the Urals-Kuzbas area. One united area, with a very intimate industrial bond. “Centre” indeed is the wrong word. It was an area so vast and so rich as to be a new country in the world. And if the Fascist advance had not been halted at Leningrad and Stalingrad and before Moscow, the Soviet Union’s Government could well have moved thither and still held out till its gigantic war-production could catch up with its gigantic needs.
