ABSTRACT
The organizations implementing research in Japan fall into the following broad categories: (1) universities, (2) national and public laboratories, (3) private laboratories, (4) special corporations, (5) industrial research organizations. To examine the nature of the interactive relationship between the first four and industrially related research, the general characteristics of each will be given.
