The first of the case studies of the adoption and absorption of imported technology has to do with the petrochemical industry. Chosen because of its reputation for being extremely capital-intensive and for employing a very sophisticated technology, the petrochemical industry in Korea has, none the less, exhibited an extraordinarily rapid rate of absorption of foreign techniques. As will be seen, the chief reasons for the rapid absorption arise within Korea itself, out of the inclination of the people, their educational system and their form of government.
