ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 offers recommendations for making improvements to defense counsel policies in the United States. It draws on the prior studies and the current study to offer specific language that assists policies in protecting youth due process rights through defense counsel representation. It also discusses the need for increased data collection related to both juvenile defense and racially/ethnically disparate contact with the juvenile justice system. It connects the limitations within the study to legislative opportunities to improve data collection and ultimately due process protections. This final chapter ties together the findings of the monograph with opportunities for future improvements in policies protecting youth due process rights.
