ABSTRACT
Chapter 12 provides an overview of recent policies reforming the juvenile justice system and the provision of defense counsel in states across the US. The chapter provides an overview of trends in policy improvement for the juvenile justice system generally and explains how the role of counsel can be further protected through these policy changes generally. The chapter then presents an overview of trends in policy improvements to juvenile defense specifically. The chapter presents examples of legislation as it discusses the general juvenile justice policy changes and the improvements to defense counsel policies. The improvements to these policies track the findings from the qualitative and quantitative portions of the study.
