As part of a re-traditionalized culture, Khomeini placed great emphasis on media, the importance of its Islamicization, and the urgent need for dissemination of the pure form of Islam for the salvation of the people who had been “enslaved” by the monarchy. Despite his apparent disgust for the Shah and all he had achieved, Khomeini used the relics of the National Iranian Radio and Television to make an empire called the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). This chapter begins with discussing IRIB’s history and general aims and policies and then focusing on IRIB’s administration in relation to the state and more specific policies on human rights.
