ABSTRACT

Texas is a red state, with conservative, Anglo, male leaders in the most visible leadership roles. Rick Perry served as governor from late 2000 through 2014; Governor Greg Abbott has served in statewide office since 1995. John Cornyn has been U.S. senator since 2003, and Ted Cruz took a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2013. All are boots-with-suits conservatives in the Texas tradition. Cruz is Cuban-American, so the Texas tradition is expanding a bit, but not nearly as dramatically as it is expanding at the local level.
