ABSTRACT

JASPER read the letter twice, and the conclusive lines: he felt the sorrows they delineated; he felt them impressed upon his heart by the strong power of sympathy. His comrades now shouted from the sands: they had discovered a fresh spring, and were bearing on their shoulders several casks of provision which the night breakers had washed on shore. Jasper descended, for little Edmund was faint for want of food. A fire was kindled by means of the flint which they found in the fowling-piece, and the dry leaves of autumn blazed chearfully while they cooked their morning meal.
