ABSTRACT

First published in The Examiner, X, 19 January 1817, pp. 33–4. This piece is followed by a discussion of Pitt’s financial policies, particularly the use of the ‘sinking fund’ to pay back the national debt (pp. 34–7); see also The Examiner, X, 26 January 1817, pp. 49–50 as well as fairly regular reports on the state of the country’s finances (for example, 5 January 1817, pp. 6-7). While this piece adopts a more general line of argument in which he voices his concern that the profit motive is transforming society, it is again evidence of Hunt’s concern with economic issues (see headnote above, p. 83).
