ABSTRACT

First published in The News, II, 16 March 1806, p. 352. The following selection contains two essays from this week’s Theatricals section: a critique of current fashionable eccentricities in acting styles (reprinted in Critical Essays, ‘Appendix’, pp. 1–3), and a condemnation, titled ‘Academical Theatre’, of the new vogue of child actors (reprinted in Critical Essays, ‘Appendix’, pp. 34–5). For a record of Hunt’s recurrent criticism of child actors, see headnote above, p. 6. This week’s Theatricals section concludes with a brief notice of a disturbance at Covent Garden caused by the Management’s last-minute substitution of a new play on the bill.
