ABSTRACT

First printed in The Examiner, II, 8 October 1809, pp. 641–2. In The Examiner for 1 October 1809, pp. 625–6, Hunt expressed his hopes about the successor of George III. The Morning Post (on which see ‘Introduction’ above, p. xxxiv, and p. 362, n. 4) read this as an insult to the King, and the government would agree, bringing charges against both The Examiner and The Morning Chronicle which quoted Hunt; see The Examiner, II, 3 December 1809, pp. 771–2 and below, pp. 119–22. For pieces on the earlier libel trial, see headnote above, pp. 83–4. For pieces on this second libel trial, see headnote below, p. 119. See also Autobiography, vol. ii, p. 66–74 and Stout, pp. 12–14.
