ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with her marriage to George Macaulay, his connections with elements in the Scottish Enlightenment, and the political situation in Great Britain immediately after the accession of George III, during which period the first three volumes of the history were written. This chapter provides an account of the content of those volumes, her exchanges with David Hume and Samuel Johnson, and the contemporary reception of her work more broadly.
