ABSTRACT
In this chapter we shall present the first phase in the evolution of modern Soviet agriculture—that of the transition from serfdom to collective farming. We shall show how the Bolsheviks, after the revolution of 1917, inherited an agricultural sector that bore the mark of an emancipated but largely dissatisfied peasantry, and how this inheritance was transformed step by step into the collective farm system that still remains largely intact.
