ABSTRACT
When some portion of reality is called a “system,” it is perceived as a unified whole, something that stands out and is recognized as “itself.” The clearest example of such a system is a living organism. The most characteristic feature of an organism is that it retains its identity even though its material constituents may be replaced within a short time.
