Environmental Factors

The world is populated by living organisms which can survive only under particular environmental conditions. These include a number of chemicals that will allow metabolism, reproduction and variation to take place. Of the 96 elements that are believed to constitute the universe, at least 36 and probably as many as 46 are major or minor constituents of protoplasm (Allee et al., 1949).
