ABSTRACT

Most of the animals inhabiting the earth are ‘cryptozoic’, and lead hidden lives in microenvironments where the conditions are favourable for their survival. They comprise an assemblage of small terrestrial forms, found dwelling in darkness beneath stones, rotten logs, the bark of trees, and other similar situations (Savory, 1971). The cryptosphere in which they live, includes fallen leaves that lie decaying on the earth’s surface, twigs, stones, pieces of bark and fragments of rock and wood.
