ABSTRACT

While natural evolution is a slow, random process beset with false starts, dead ends, and long periods of inactivity, business evolution is a rapid, intentional, active process. However, there are some lessons to be taken from natural evolution and applied to evolving the C-Suite. The first lesson is that we can’t wait for evolution to progress naturally in the C-Suite. While we wait, our competition morphs into something we can’t catch, or we find we have new competitors who evolved in another industry. Technology is evolving more rapidly every year. Customers evolve as their requirements change and as they scan the internet for new possibilities. Society is changing and regulation evolves to meet risks, challenges, and questionable practices. And products evolve or take evolutionary leaps into new forms. Waiting in business is the path to a dead end.
