ABSTRACT
With a conviction that atomic war was a likely contingency in the future and that ground combat operations would be required Army leaders undertook the challenge of revamping organization, doctrine and instruction to enable it to fulfill its mission in the atomic age. The premise underlying these new concepts was that the Army must be able to fight, survive, and win if tasked to defend the United States and its interest on the atomic battlefield.
