ABSTRACT

A review of the twists and turns in recent U.S. policy toward China not only says something about the lack of consensus and effectiveness in U.S. policy. It also graphically illustrates how deeply involved the United States has become in such a wide range of issue areas of importance to China and its political leadership. It is hard to imagine another element in the equation of factors that will determine China’s future role in world affairs that is more important and more uncertain than the United States.
