ABSTRACT
No country, especially small and underdeveloped ones, can hope to escape the influence of their neighbors. One unfortunate tendency in the way states relate to one another is the extent to which they exaggerate differences, ignore common interests, and cling to fantasies about themselves and one another. This tendency has been particularly evident in the modern history of South Asia.
