ABSTRACT

IN THIS PAPER I WISH to offer a few observations on some particular aspects of the concept of policing or disciplining (Sozialdisziplinierung) that are implicit in my interpretation of the Well Ordered Police State in the 18th century. 1 I shall base myself on the Russian experience which I am better acquainted with and which presents features that shed light on the dynamics of the process of "disciplining" society for the "modern" world.
