Chapter 12 summarizes the journey undertaken to understand maternity leave in the United States. Maternity leave is a subject that is both complicated and complex. We have come to understand, through listening to young mothers about their personal and professional experiences and perceptions of using maternity leave, why it is that they deserve access to a reasonable length of paid maternity leave. In this chapter we offer suggestions that may be taken by individuals and organizations that are interested in advancing this conversation about a reasonable paid leave.
