ABSTRACT

Harry is 93 years old and lives by himself in a small house in the city. He cooks and cleans for himself and gets a ride each week to a nearby shopping center where he buys his groceries and takes care of his banking and other errands. He meets friends at a community center every Tuesday and Thursday to play cards and to participate in an exercise class for seniors. Although Harry is fairly active in his daily life, health problems prevent him from walking long distances and performing strenuous activities. He has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which leaves him breathless after walking more than a block. Arthritis in his hips and shoulders makes it painful for him to do heavy lifting and bending. Fortunately, a neighbor helps out by mowing Harry’s lawn in the summers and shoveling snow from his sidewalk in the winters.
