ABSTRACT

This chapter extends the discussion began in Chapter 2 by further exploring the roles and activities of digital editors, but from different perspectives. Our metaphor for this chapter is altitude. From the highest view – think satellite photography – these roles include building spaces and places and determining mission and purpose. From a mid-level view – think bird’s-eye perspective – the job means ensuring consistency in terms of user experience and in the style, rhythm, and voice of a website, app, or digital presence. At ground level – think Google Street View – we look at how editors curate experiences that interactors will hopefully incorporate into their daily lives. At this street level, editors spend a lot of time thinking about style – both visual and written.
