This chapter focuses on digital media law as it relates to writing, editing, and publishing in digital media, providing a basic roadmap of the legal issues facing digital writers and publishers. After exploring the rights of access to information, which is of utmost concern to journalists, public relations practitioners, marketers, and many other professionals, the chapter looks at a few of the more complex legal areas for digital media, including libel, privacy, and copyright. Also of interest are the implications of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the takedown notice in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Finally, the chapter addresses the implications of methods of publication and dissemination that, because of their potentially global reach, can subject them to the laws of other nations.
