Among the many factors that can influence the quality of father-daughter relationships, one of the most powerful is the mother. From the time their daughter is born, the mother both promotes and impedes the father-daughter relationship in a multitude of ways. As we will see in the next chapter, her influence is especially powerful if the parents are no longer living together. In most families, mother-daughter relationships also differ from father-daughter relationships in many ways that we will explore in this chapter.
