ABSTRACT
In this book, I seek to explain how change occurs in American higher education. I will try to expose the structural features of the academic enterprise that make it remarkably adaptive to changing conditions in society and in the economy. Identifying these organizational and structural features of the American approach to higher education will also enable us to look ahead to changes that may come in the near future.
