ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews important issues related to founding CEOs’ leadership communication in startups in China. It discusses six key purposes that entrepreneurial leadership communication serves in startups, including articulating the vision, defining culture values, advocating for the brand, managing investor relations, recruiting and managing talents, and building trust. The chapter further discusses how startup founders and CEOs can effectively communicate to build brand, manage relationships, and establish credibility and trust among stakeholders. Such strategies include portraying a compelling vision, embracing transparency, listening with care and respect, communicating authenticity, and fostering equality, dialogue, empowerment, and inclusion. The chapter concludes with a comparison of various channels entrepreneurs and startup leaders can use for their leadership communication and their effectiveness, including face-to-face venues, mobile messages (e.g, WeChat), phones, and emails.
