How can a tree become a guitar? It is cut down, transported, sawn into boards, sold as lumber, purchased by a craftsperson, sliced, planed, sanded, shaped, and glued, fitted with tuning keys, strung with strings, and adorned with frets, a pick guard, and other functional and simply decorative niceties. Not because it takes music lessons. The business-speak for all this is that it passes through a value chain. A rudimentary value chain is drawn like a series of interlocking chevrons, something like this:
