ABSTRACT

When I graduated from college as an eager, unemployed teacher candidate, I remember being told the importance of a good résumé. It was impressed upon me by my college advisor that the résumé could make or break my chances of getting hired and, therefore, should occupy a great deal of my time and focus. A lot has happened since then to change how employers screen candidates.

The modern age of online application systems has streamlined how employers access application information. This, in turn, has affected how employers use résumés. In this chapter we will focus on the roles that the résumé and cover letter play in the hiring process, offer some helpful tips for writing these documents efficiently and effectively, and address applying online.
