When I graduated from college as an eager, unemployed teacher candidate, I remember being told the importance of a good résumé. It was impressed upon me by my college advisor that the résumé could make or break my chances of getting hired and, therefore, should occupy a great deal of my time and focus. A lot has happened since then to change how employers screen candidates.

In this chapter we will focus on the roles that the résumé and cover letter play in the hiring process, offer some helpful tips for writing these documents efficiently and effectively, and address applying online.
