ABSTRACT

So far, I have painted a pretty gloomy picture of our healthcare system. I outlined in Chapter 1 the less-than-ideal way it's financed, and I described in Chapter 2 a number of providers' major frustration points. Just to recap, here is the list of things that don't make sense to hospitals, health systems, physicians, and other clinicians:

Fundamental confusion about who the customer really is and how that drives the purchasing decision

The underfunding of Medicare and Medicaid

Unfunded mandates and overbearing regulation

Being at the mercy of others

Programs that look good on paper but which might make no sense in the long run

The lack of uniform IT communications protocols
