The following list identifies a number of basic books and articles in the field of gerontology, particularly social gerontology. Some are classics, representing major theoretical positions or the results of an important study. There are a number of standard reference volumes--compendiums of articles by important writers in the field. Other, more recent works, provide a historical perspective. Several volumes are statements by the aged themselves. This list also identifies a few of the better anthologies--collections of significant previously published writings in the field. Taken as a whole, these writings should provide a solid grounding for anyone seriously interested in the study of aging.
