ABSTRACT
Within the span of a single generation the people of the Petorca Valley experienced a profound transformation in marriage behavior, life expectancy, and fertility patterns. The purpose of this chapter is to relate these demographic changes to an explanatory paradigm, and to compare the pace and degree of local changes with national tendencies.
