ABSTRACT
To suggest a diminishing role for the primaries is a skittish undertaking. Yet the bald reality is that the primary exercise is now madness. We have reformed ourselves into a primary maze that is chaotic and confusing, so costly as to dissuade most good possible candidates from even trying, and subject to massive media misinterpretation. Primaries additionally give’ the voters only one choice when in fact most primaries are held when reasonable voters might be satisfied with more than one of the candidates, especially in the earlier primaries.*
