ABSTRACT
Northern College is a residential adult education facility housed in an old stately home in South Yorkshire. In what was once a small parlor, Barbara sat at one corner of the tables arranged in a rectangle. The ten adult students described how they had been made redundant (unemployed) and related their own particular pleasures at being able to participate in this one-week "Understanding Unemployment" course. As the guest speaker, David had just Indicated that if anyone had questions during his presentation on unemployment and new information technology, he or she should feel free to speak up.
